Got kids in the kitchen this summer? Here’s how to make it fun in three easy steps.

Give Each Child Their Own Job

Give each child jobs within the kitchen based on their individual age and abilities. Assigning age-appropriate tasks to your little chefs allows them to participate actively in the cooking process while staying safe. Younger children can help with simpler tasks like washing fruits and vegetables, stirring ingredients, or measuring dry ingredients. Older kids can handle more complex responsibilities such as cutting with a blunt knife, sautéing under supervision, or following a recipe independently.

Make Each Child "Head Chef" for the Day

Choose one day a week to make each child “head chef” for the day. If you have multiple children, each gets their own day. Working with each of them one-on-one in the kitchen will bring you closer and create memories that will last a lifetime. It will also make your kids feel more important in your home by giving them a special responsibility over those meals.

Allow the "Head Chef" to Plan and Prepare the Meals

Allow that child to choose all the meals for that day and help prepare them. To make cooking more exciting for kids, let them choose the recipes or ingredients they want to work with. Encourage them to explore diverse cuisines and introduce them to new flavors and ingredients. Whether it's making homemade pizza, baking cookies, or creating colorful salads, involving children in the decision-making process makes them more invested in the outcome.
