Gather Your Ingredients and Supplies

Baking a savory cake isn't much different than baking a dessert. Many of the ingredients will look familiar. In this case, you can put away the sugar and replace it with rich herb-based flavors.

To begin, you will need to buy or gather the following:

  • 200 grams (1.5 cups) of Lehi Mills Artisan Baking Flour
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 150 grams ( about 3/4 cups) of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 200 grams (about 1 cup) of cream cheese
  • Three eggs
  • 150 grams (about 1/2 cup) of plain Greek yogurt
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • 50 ml (or 1/4 cup) of vegetable oil
  • 5-6 fresh sage leaves

You will also need a few supplies on hand. If you are a home baker, you should already have most of these available!

  • An average-sized bundt pan
  • A mixing bowl
  • A hand mixer or stand mixer
  • A wooden spoon

Make sure that your bundt pan isn't too large. You may be able to split the batter into mini bundt pans, but that may involve variations in baking time.

Preparing Your Savory Bundt Cake

Before You Begin: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 180 degrees Celsius). Take care to grease the inside of your bundt pan. If you aren't careful, your cake will stick, and the aesthetics of this recipe are half the fun!

Step One: Add your flour, baking powder, and salt to your mixing bowl. Stir until combined, then set those ingredients aside.

Step Two: Crack your three eggs into another mixing bowl or the mixing bowl of your stand mixer. Beat them at high speed for about ten minutes. Add your vegetable oil and continue to beat the mixture for another minute.

Step Three: Add the yogurt and cream cheese to the egg and oil mixture. Lower the speed and continue to mix until smooth.

Step Four: Gently add your flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Stir it together with a wooden spoon. Continue stirring until the mixture absorbs all the flour.

Step Five: Carefully chop your sage leaves. Add them to the batter.

Step Six: Add your grated cheddar cheese to the batter. Gently stir the cheese and sage into the mixture until just combined.

Step Seven: Transfer your batter to your pre-greased bundt cake pan. Tap it on the counter a few times to ensure it's sitting evenly.

Step Eight: Place your prepared pan into your preheated oven. Bake for 30-40 minutes.

You can check for readiness by inserting a toothpick into the center. You will know it is ready when the toothpick comes out dry. Ideally, you will see a few visible crumbs.

Step Nine: Leave the cake in the pan and allow it to cool for half an hour. Then, run a knife around the edges to prevent it from sticking. Slowly release the cake from the pan and place it on a plate.

Step Ten: Carefully slice the cake and serve! Enjoy your tart, moist, and buttery breakfast bundt cake!

Serving Your Savory Bundt Cake

Your breakfast bundt cake may be savory and nutritious, but you're still eating cake for breakfast! Your meal might be more satiating when served as one part of a nutritionally complete breakfast. We have a few serving suggestions that can help elevate your morning meal even further!

Add Protein

While the eggs lend this recipe some protein, the dish is more filling if you add some more! Consider serving your bundt cake with breakfast meats like bacon, sausage, or ham. You can also fry up some sunny-side-up or over-easy eggs and dip your cake into the delicious runny yolk!

Add Fruit

Two types of fruit go particularly well with sage: apples and pineapple. You might slice up some fruit and serve it on the side. A touch of applesauce or pineapple reduction is also delicious for dipping!

Add Vegetables

Our favorite accompaniment for this savory breakfast cake is a vegetable hash! Sage and potatoes are a match made in heaven. The flavors won't conflict!

Roast up some Brussels sprouts and carrots to add even more nutrition and flavor to your plate.
