How Long Have We Been in Love With Muffins?

The familiar muffin is a little cup-shaped single-serve fast bread that is frequently sweet and typically served warm. Our best muffin mix is a uniquely American delight that dates back to the middle of the 19th century, when the first recorded recipes for muffins started to appear. Fruit, nuts, and spices are frequently found in muffins.

For a savory twist, they might also include cheese, cheese, and veggies. The sheer range of tastes available makes them an enticing complement to any meal or as a snack. The first muffin mix was developed by Mr. McCollum of New Brunswick, New Jersey, in the 1920s. It was a corn muffin mix that he tested with the parishioners of his church. In the 1950s, muffins were first promoted as baked foods because preservatives prevented them from quickly going bad since packaged mixtures were not easily accessible.

Easy Ways to Gift Muffins

When giving muffins as a gift, make sure you let them cool completely before wrapping. Wrapping hot baked goods will actually cause them to lose a bit of freshness. If you are shipping your gift, be sure to prepare them with your best muffin mix the same day you plan to ship them.

You can wrap your muffins individually or as a group. Common items used are butcher or cellophane paper with twine or ribbons. If you use ribbons, you can pick seasonal designs or your recipient’s favorite color.

It’s always nice to have a personal message with your gift. Let your recipient know how much you appreciate them if they’re known to you. If you’re welcoming a neighbor to the area, your note might include tips for reheating your muffins or even a package of the best muffin mix so they can make their own when they’ve eaten what you gave them.

If you want unique packaging, you can opt for canning jars, boxes with windows that showcase your muffins, or a basket with a cute tea towel they can add to their kitchen. Always make sure to line your containers. This is important, especially if your mix uses oil or butter. It also just makes your gift look nicer.

If you want to add a little something to your package, consider the season. A small decorative bell would look cute tied with twine and a cardboard box. You might also put a tea towel in the bottom of a small bucket with a ribbon wrapped around the handle for summer. The ideas are endless.

Best Muffin Mix Flavors

If possible, create your gift using a variety of muffin flavors. Lehi Mills has a wide variety to choose from. You can choose blueberry, raspberry, lemon, and more. We also offer vegan muffin mixes that are rich with flavor.

You can also opt for a whole grain muffin with our Golden Harvest Muffin Mix. This mix has four grams of protein and is great on its own, or make it unique by adding fruits or nuts.

If you’re wondering what muffin flavors are most popular, blueberry muffins win by a landslide. You can add a streusel topping or leave it off. Chocolate chip muffins are a close second. The nice thing about our best muffin mix is that you can add chocolate chips, if you want, to any of our flavors. Or, you can flip it around and make muffins from our chocolate chip cookie mix.

What Else Can You Make With the Best Muffin Mix?

Did you know that you can make more than just muffins with muffin mix? Try our Blueberry Orange Bread when you’re looking for something beyond the muffin tin.

Blueberry Orange Bread

  • 1 Box Blueberry Muffin Mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • juice of 1 orange
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Extra orange zest for topping

To make the bread, combine the muffin mix, 2 eggs, oil, water, and orange zest. Fold in the fresh blueberries. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan. Press a few more fresh blueberries into the top of the loaf. Bake at 375 for 50-60 minutes. Cover the top with foil for the last 20 minutes if it starts to get too brown.

To make the glaze, mix the orange juice and the powdered sugar. Add more powdered sugar or juice until you reach your desired thickness. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled blueberry orange bread loaf. Top with extra orange zest, and enjoy!

You can use this same blueberry muffin mix to make doughnuts that will have your family coming back for more!

Blueberry Muffin Donuts

For the donuts:

  • 1 box Lehi Mills Muffin Mix
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Cooking spray or butter

Make the batter according to the instructions on the back of the box. Add lemon or orange zest if you’re looking for a twist! Once mixed, pour the batter into a plastic bag and clip one corner with scissors. Grease donut pan liberally. Pipe a small amount of batter into the pan. If you fill each donut slot more than 1/3 full, they will rise too much and won’t keep the donut shape. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes. The sides should be golden brown and crispy, and the top will be significantly lighter. That’s okay because you’re going to dip that side in glaze anyway.

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons water

Mix powdered sugar, vanilla, and water in a bowl. Whisk until well combined. The glaze should be opaque. If it’s too watery, add more powdered sugar. Dip the light side of each donut in the glaze. Set on a cooling rack to dry.
