Want to know more about how to make s'mores waffles? In this guide, we'll give you some sweet history about s'mores as well as a delicious s'mores waffle recipe. Keep reading to find out more about the s'more.

A Brief History about the S'more

The name "s'more" actually comes from the combining of the words 'some' and 'more', because when you taste a s'more, you're definitely going to want some more.

The graham cracker was invented in 1829 by a Presbyterian Minister in New Jersey named Sylvester Graham as a way to control certain urges. The milk chocolate Hershey bar we know today was made by the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1900. Each Hershey bar contains six pieces you can break apart known as "pips."

The first S'mores recipe appeared in a Girl Scout Handbook titled "Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts" in 1927. Traditionally, the marshmallows are put on a stick and cooked over a campfire until they are nice and toasty on the outside and gooey on the inside. The warm marshmallow is then placed between a section of chocolate and two graham crackers.

National S'mores Day takes place every August 10th, but you don't have to wait until then to partake in a tasty s'more or two. S'mores waffles take the sweet gooeyness of chocolate and marshmallow and team up with the tasty golden brown texture of a waffle to give your tastebuds a flavor overload.

Ingredients for Making S'mores Waffles

A box of Belgian waffle mix is a quick and easy way to whip up your waffle base in no time. Simply follow the directions on the box to make your waffles.

All of the ingredients you need are already pre-measured for you. You just need to add water. You'll also need:

  • ½ cup of crushed graham crackers
  • 2 cups of mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup of milk chocolate chips

To give your s'mores waffles that undeniably graham cracker sweet taste and texture, you will need, of course, graham crackers as one of the main staples for your recipe.

About ½ a cup of ground or crushed graham crackers added to the waffle batter will give your s'mores waffles their cinnamon and sugar sweetness, combined with a little coarseness for crunch.

The next item you will need is marshmallows. Instead of one large marshmallow that usually comprises a s'more, using smaller marshmallows spread throughout will melt easier and give your s'mores waffles a gooier taste.

Use 2 cups of mini marshmallows or, if you prefer, a couple of heaping teaspoons of marshmallow fluff instead.

Last but not least, you'll need chocolate. You can go with a tried and true favorite in the Hershey bar "pips" or pieces. Or you can opt to use a cup of mini milk chocolate chips or chocolate sauce.

1 cup of milk chocolate chips will melt down easier than chocolate bar pieces, but you can go with less than a cup depending on how chocolatey you want your s'mores waffles to be.

Prep Your Waffle Iron

Pre-heat your waffle maker or waffle iron. Spray the top and the bottom with non-stick cooking spray. Let the waffle iron warm up thoroughly before pouring the batter into it so that your waffles will turn out golden brown and not soggy.

You can mix all of your ingredients together and pour them into the waffle maker if you want a more blended flavor. To keep the marshmallow and chocolate from making a mess inside your waffle iron, a piece of parchment paper placed on the top and bottom of the griddle will prevent too much sticking.

However, if you want that true s'mores taste, only make the waffle batter mixed with the graham crackers first. This creates your base for adding the marshmallows and the chocolate.

Making Your S'mores Waffles

For this s'mores waffle recipe, your waffle iron serves as a tool for making the base for the top and bottom. It also serves as a press to meld the ingredients together inside of the waffles.

Think of it like a sandwich. The waffle is the bread, and the chocolate and marshmallows inside are the filling.

Place one formed waffle back inside the waffle maker, add the chocolate and marshmallows, and top with the other waffle. Press the waffle iron lid down on the whole waffle to melt the ingredients in the middle.

This seals in the flavor and makes the marshmallow and chocolate fill in each of the waffle's deep pockets inside. When you cut into these s'mores waffles, the warm and rich chocolatey and marshmallowy goodness seeps out.

S'mores Waffles Topping Ideas

The best thing about s'mores waffles is that there are so many ways to make them your own. You can add as much or as little as you want until you've fine-tuned the recipe to your liking.

If you want to top your s'mores waffles with extra toasted marshmallows, a kitchen torch or a long-necked lighter will do wonders to give the slightly charred taste of a toasted marshmallow.

You could also add a drizzle of chocolate sauce on the top and a spritz of whipped cream, or an extra handful of crumbled graham crackers sprinkled on the top with additional chocolate chips. It's completely up to you.
